In the Summer of 1968 the television networks switched their coverage away from the Amphitheater where the Democratic National Convention delegates were voting on the nomination, to a pitched battle in front of the Conrad Hilton hotel. During the debate on the peace plank, the worst day of rioting occurred in the so-called "Battle of Michigan Avenue." Subsequent battles between police and protesters occurred nightly in Lincoln Park and Grant Park.
